+drop items on mercenaries

Does equipping mercenaries with items that increase gold drop and/or item drop chances indeed help those things? Are must they be equipped on the main hero?

so if i gete 20% to drop an item. 10 fights in a row with same enemy and he dropped something twice. Then +5 percent will be half item more  ;D
