Bugs / I think my merc is gone

I bought a staff for my merc and when I start the storyline quest (step 10) there isnt the option to add the merc to the fight, and in the Hero screen, there isnt a tab there for my mercs (I have 2), and a 'load failed' msg appeared in a small red window in the lower right of the screen.
