Looks like this bug have just been fixed. Ive finally persuaded my whimpy Merc from Hope village to fight in Sonoria domain. Although yesterday he refused to do that

Sure custom Mercenary's names would be nice addition to the game. Or at least different default names for mercs like Slaughter, Butcher, Heartseeker, Braineater 
And I have never tried, but looks like it is possible to get rid of your merc. There is large Dismiss button in the mercenary's equipment menu.

Well maybe this looks in the first day, then you have 24 action points, 100 gold and you heal after leveling up. In the second day there won't be so much action as in the first one. Then you will have just several action points left and will lack of hitpoints (because you wont level up so often and wont have any money left to buy food anymore).
