I got the same thing. Two of them, in fact. The battle I got them in gave a MY SQL error on the item screen when the battle was done (sorry didnt get the error).

The small red ball is an item place holder. That means when an items should had been dropped or moved or whatever action is done to it and the system fails for some reason that red ball appears. Basically it's an empty item. Regarding yours they probably are because of the 1-2mins of updating done yesterday morning. The red ball has no use at all so you are free to dispose of it.
