items above requirements - possible?

Hi guys, I noticed that if (as an example) i give my merc a ring which gives +X to strength, that merc can use an item which demand lets say 70 strength, but when I remove the ring, the item becomes red (merc strength is below minimum requirements ).... does it means the equipment is not being used? or if its there its working?

yeah, even if the item is equipped, it won't be used

I have a merc that has a shield, according to his info, he is using it, but the shield is not at is strength (removed his rings away)... so why is that?
