For some reason I can no longer select my merc for adventures. He still shows up, just when I click the box to select him nothing happens.

Is the merc dead (0 HP)? Another reason might be that mercs hired in Hope Village cannot be used in Tier 2 missions.

merc hired in hope village can be used everywhere but still he can be "dead" (0HP). then you need first go to healer with him
