Number of mercenaries

I just now noticed, by mistake, that more then 5 mercenaries can be hired.

Is it a bug or we can hire as many mercenaries as we want and use the group of 5 depending on the type of enemy we are fighting against?

You can hire 6, but you can activate and use in battle 5 of them.
