I prefer the Greek 'Η ταν ή επί τας
means "or with it or upon it"...
Every time a Spartan mother helped her son to equip his armor & weapons when she gives him the shield (hoplon) said this, come back with the shield or upon it. It is almost impossible to flee carrying the hoplon and this way the deeper mean is or win the battle or come back dead (with the shield).
