I believe in shops in different provinces bread and other goods cost different - it is cheapest in Hope village but in some of the other provinces, I have noticed as well prices are variable...I guess part of the global economony ;)

I've got no problems with Marauders having a 25% chance of blocking attacks ... my turf is with how frequent you are able to block (both enemies and Mercs) : that defies probability !!
and it's not just an isolated case : the previous battle was just like that  :o

I looked over the battle. The marauders blocked 8/20 of Starbuck's attacks; but they also blocked 0/6 of Merc's attacks, putting them at 8/26. Merc managed to block 7/20 attacks directed at him.

A quick probabilistic analysis shows that the chances for 8 or better of 26 at 25% happens in 31.48% of the cases - roughly one of three battles you should see this ratio or even more blocks.

7/20 at 15% is more rare, though: 2.19% or one in 50, rather statistically significant.

I'll try taking a look in my next battles and see if I get any strange results.
I've made a nice little Excel calculator for this sort of thing when I still remembered the formula for it. If anyone wants it I'll upload it and post a link.

Actually, it's worse than that because out of 21 attacks I made :

8 were blocked (38%)
8 were evaded (38%)
5 went through (24%)

but really, what hits me is the frequency of low numbers used to validate the Block skills ... and this is what bothers me : the spread of the random numbers used for attacks.
instead of having an equal distribution (1% chance to hit any number), it looks like they are sorted by "groups" ...

and it is not just the Marauders : my Merc too was very successful at blocking enemy attacks.

I can't say for Critical Hits, coz many of them were likely "blocked" from testing ... but to see the skill lvl 5 reduced to 16% doesn't give me hope ;)

Well, the probabilistic extrapolation I did was based on normal distribution; only the merc's performance is significantly aberrant in any way, and even that is within reason for a single occurrence. Although if you break it down to 0/6 and 8/20 the chances go down from 31.48% to 17.8% (of underperforming!) and 10.18% (of overperforming), respectively. Neither of this is still significant however, and in opposing directions, too. So I still think that as far as Block overperformance is concerned, only the merc could be considered aberrant.

As for avoidance, 8/21 at 35% is almost textbook. We're talking about a 46.35% chance for 8 or better evasions for 21 attacks. Flip of a coin really for getting 8 and more or 7 and less.

Aggregation is a more possible problem, though, and I also thought I saw such an effect - although that can be a result of random distribution also. Computerized randomizers usually aren't that great - but this sort of statistical analysis would take me longer to compile than simple Bernoulli distributions.


Bottom line: When we are presented with random results, our minds often find patterns that simply aren't there. That's a known effect in psychology (not going to touch on its relation with superstition just now). That doesn't mean you're wrong about aggregation or some bias - the randomizer may be acting up - but it also may be an artifact of our perception, nothing more.

I'm not sure where you get your numbers Poly, but the average chance of my enemies to evade was 41.7% (which means they are on par with probabilities).
Marauder had an 46.1% and Marauder - Archer had an 39.5%

My turf is really with the Blocking Skill .... if it had been only 1 "unlucky" battle, I would agree with you that it might be a matter of perception.
But the same pattern emerged in the battle before that one, with an above-average blocking successes and a lack of random numbers ... basically, they looked like distribution groups of 5.

I will keep fighting more Humanoids, hoping to be wrong ....
